According to the assessment of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), environmental pollution from plastic waste is becoming the most pressing problem that countries around the world are facing. Every year, around 400 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide, half of which are designed to be used only once, with an estimated 19-23 million tons being discharged into lakes, rivers and seas. Disposable plastic that is thrown away or burned is harmful to human health, polluting ecosystems.

According to research and analysis on plastic waste pollution by the World Bank from July 2020 to April 2021, in Vietnam, annually there are about 2.8 to 3.1 million tons of discarded plastic waste, in which, the volume of plastic waste dumped into the sea is estimated at 0.28 to 0.73 million tons/year, which has been a burden on the environment, including the marine environment. The habit of using plastic bags and disposable plastic utensils of people is increasing while people still do not have the habit of sorting daily-life garbage, especially not separating plastic waste from other types of waste, making the management and treatment of plastic waste more difficult.

In Long An, according to statistics, the volume of daily-life solid waste collected and transported for treatment in urban areas is about 700-730 tons/day and plastic waste accounts for 8-12% of them. In daily life, the amount of plastic waste generated in the province is estimated at 56-87.6 tons/day, in which, disposable plastic products and nylon bags are quite large. This amount of waste is and will be a "burden" for our existing facilities related to waste management and treatment, mainly plastic waste.
