Long An province has been striving to build and put into operation Tam Sinh Nghia household waste treatment plant in Thanh Hoa district and a waste burning plant with the capacity of 1,000 tons a day in Thu Thua district, aiming to close two open air rubbish dumps in Duc Hue and Thu Thua districts by 2020.

According to the plan on solid waste collection, transport and treatment in the phase from 2018-2020, the province strives to collect and handle 100 percent of waste in urban area and 50 percent in rural areas.

In addition, 100 percent of localities must establish registers to collect waste collection, transport and treatment service fees and 100 percent of districts, towns and cities must have garbage transit spots to collect and transport waste to treatment plants.

The provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment reported that about 575 tons of solid household waste are collected in the province a day, up 25 tons over the end of 2017.

Of these, about 40 tons are dumped in temporary landfill sites in Duc Hue and Thu Thua district.

Authorized agencies forecast that by 2020 the solid waste volume in the province will reach 783 tons a day. Hence, the provincial People’s Committee has required district people’s committees to build garbage collection and transit spots in crowded residential areas to prevent environmental pollution by December 31, 2020 at the latest./.
