Promoting e-commerce to support agricultural product consumption

In the context of digital transformation becoming an inevitable trend, e-commerce is not only a modern distribution channel but also a tool to expand the market for Vietnamese agricultural products. In recent years, the Department of Industry and Trade of Tay Ninh province has implemented many solutions to bring agricultural products to the market, supporting farmers to connect directly with consumers and large distribution systems.

Effective distribution and consumption channels

Implementing Decision No. 645, dated May 15, 2020 of the Prime Minister approving the National E-commerce Development Master Plan for the period 2021-2025, the People's Committees of provinces in the Mekong Delta and Southeast regions have issued many plans, in which priority is given to bringing agricultural products to reputable e-commerce platforms.

In Tay Ninh, as of September 2025, 35 enterprises have been supported to participate in domestic and international e-commerce platforms, 5 enterprises have been supported to build websites, 24 enterprises have completed international standard brand identity. In addition, 76 booths with 312 products have participated in the province's e-commerce platform, connected to the system of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

According to Data Science Joint Stock Company (Metric), e-commerce sales in Tay Ninh in the first 6 months of 2025 reached 1,043.13 billion VND, an increase of 133% over the same period. The leading products in terms of sales are beauty, phones and tablets, and stationery. This data confirms that e-commerce is growing strongly, creating a large space for local agricultural products to exploit.

In fact, not only light industrial or fast-moving consumer goods but also agricultural products, especially products with clear origins, certified by VietGAP, GlobalGAP, etc., are also being sought by many customers on the platforms.

Products from cooperatives and small enterprises can reach consumers in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and even expand to the Central and Northern provinces. This was previously very difficult to do when depending on traditional traders.

Trade experts estimate that if e-commerce is well utilized, Tay Ninh's vegetables, tubers, and fruits alone can increase revenue by 20-30% each year.

Mr. Vo Van Tam - owner of Sen Tam facility (Tan Thanh commune), shared: "When putting products on e-commerce platforms, we receive orders from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and even foreign customers. This helps reduce dependence on traders, and prices are more stable."

Director of Muoi Hai Safe Vegetable Cooperative (Rach Kien commune) Le Van Giay said: "Previously, the cooperative's products were mainly sold at traditional markets, and prices were often forced down. Since participating in e-commerce platforms, the cooperative's revenue has increased by nearly 30%. Customers in Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai regularly place orders. We clearly see the potential for development, but we also need more support in online sales skills, especially livestreaming."

Not only businesses, but consumers also benefit from e-commerce. Ms. Le Thi Hong, a customer in Long An ward, said: “Buying agricultural products online is convenient, safe, and sometimes the price is cheaper than at the market. I hope that more and more local specialties will be listed on the market for easy access.”

Director of the Department of Industry and Trade Huynh Van Quang Hung emphasized: “E-commerce helps fundamentally change the way agricultural products are consumed. We not only put products on the market but also support the building of brands, trademarks, and QR codes. Thanks to that, local agricultural products are increasingly affirming their position.”

Expanding scale, enhancing value

Conference on connecting supply chains and e-commerce opens up opportunities to bring Tay Ninh agricultural products to the world market

On September 6, 2025, Tay Ninh organized the conference "Connecting the supply chain of import-export goods and e-commerce in Tay Ninh province" with the participation of many enterprises and international distribution systems. Within the framework of the program, experts discussed market prospects, capacity and demand for connecting the supply chain of local enterprises with Aeon, Central Retail, LuLu, Walmart, Amazon, etc.

The Q&A session was lively, helping local enterprises better understand the requirements, technical standards and ways to approach large supply chains. In particular, the signing ceremony of memorandums of understanding between Tay Ninh province and many international partners has opened new doors for local agricultural products to participate more deeply in the world market.

In addition to the outstanding results, many enterprises, cooperatives and small business households still face many challenges when participating in e-commerce. The biggest obstacle is the ability to access information technology infrastructure, lack of human resources with expertise in platform management, digital marketing and logistics operations.

In addition, the payment issue also has many risks, from online fraud to customers' cash spending habits. Many businesses are concerned that consumer confidence is affected by the situation of counterfeit, fake goods, ot the quality of goods is not strictly controlled.

Another problem is the difference between urban and rural areas. Enterprises in central and urban areas have easy access to high-speed Internet, have young teams with good technology; meanwhile, many cooperatives in border areas are still struggling with weak connection lines and lack of specialized e-commerce human resources.

In addition, promoting products on new platforms such as TikTok Shop or livestream requires a sales mindset that is completely different from traditional methods. This causes many farmers, although having good products, to not be bold enough to put their products on the platform, leading to missed opportunities to expand the market.

Mr. Tran Anh Thy - owner of Hoa Lan Giong orchid garden (Phuoc Ly commune), confided: "We did put our products on the market but the shipping process is slow, the cost is high, sometimes customers cancel orders because of the long wait. In addition, to livestream to sell products professionally, we have to hire staff with technical knowledge, which is very expensive, affecting profits."

The Department of Industry and Trade has proposed many synchronous solutions such as training e-commerce human resources, opening training courses on livestream, digital advertising, booth management, branding; promoting online trade: organizing cashless payment fairs; promoting OCOP products on TikTok Shop; connecting businesses with international platforms such as Felix.store, Amazon; developing infrastructure and logistics: investing in cold storage, express delivery services, upgrading digital infrastructure, ensuring information security; perfecting the legal system, building the Law on E-commerce, controlling fraud, protecting consumers, preventing tax losses; building a sustainable brand, focusing on warranty, and post-sales service, enhancing reputation.

Director of the Department of Industry and Trade Huynh Van Quang Hung informed: “In the coming time, the province aims to develop e-commerce according to three major pillars. Firstly, perfecting the legal framework to create a corridor to ensure a favorable and transparent business environment, preventing fraud, protecting consumers, and at the same time encouraging innovation and application of technology in e-commerce. Secondly, focusing on perfecting information technology infrastructure, improving transmission quality, data security, supporting businesses in digital transformation, especially small and medium enterprises. Thirdly, on the business side, it is necessary to invest in improving brand reputation and quality of after-sales service because these are decisive factors in customers' return and market expansion. This will be the foundation for e-commerce to become a new driving force for economic growth, bringing Tay Ninh agricultural products further.”

Mr. Hung also added that the province will link the goal of developing e-commerce with the national digital transformation program and the plan to build an e-government to create a sustainable, transparent and modern foundation. In the period of 2025-2030, Tay Ninh strives to have more OCOP products traded through e-commerce platforms, while forming online sales channels aimed at international markets. This is not only a step forward in trade but also contributes to raising the brand of Tay Ninh agricultural products on the export map.

E-commerce has become a strategic solution to help local agricultural products reach further, affirming their position in the domestic and international markets. With the determination of the government, the initiative of enterprises and the response of the people, e-commerce will continue to expand in scale, increase value, and contribute to bringing Vietnamese agricultural products further into the global supply chain./.
