Dragon fruit price increases as entering season end

Since the beginning of November 2023, the price of dragon fruit in Long An province has increased and remained stable. However, the output is not high anymore as entering the end of harvest season.

Farmers are excited to harvest dragon fruit due to high and stable selling prices

According to many farmers, currently, dragon fruit prices are high because they have entered the end of the harvest season. Specifically, the price ranges from 10,000-30,000 VND/kg. In particular, the price of white-flesh dragon fruit ranges from 10,000-12,000 VND/kg; The price of red flesh dragon fruit type 1 is from 28,000-30,000 VND/kg, type 2 is from 22,000-24,000 VND/kg, type 3 is from 16,000-18,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Le Van Binh (Binh Quoi commune, Chau Thanh district) has just harvested 4 tons of dragon fruit, selling them for 25,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, he earned a profit of over 60 million VND. Mr. Binh said: "Since the beginning of 2023, the price of dragon fruit has been relatively stable, not like last year. This is a motivation for farmers to feel secure in investing and taking care of dragon fruit gardens."

Having just harvested more than 2 hectares of dragon fruit and sold them for 23,000 VND/kg, Mr. Nguyen Van Be (An Luc Long commune, Chau Thanh district) shared: "The price of dragon fruit, although not as high as in previous years, is stable. Therefore, growers have high income and can feel secure in investing in and continuing to take care of their gardens to prepare for off-season production."

Currently, the province has successfully built the geographical indication "Chau Thanh Long An Dragon Fruit" and has 3 cooperatives, 1 association granted certificate of right to use the geographical indication "Chau Thanh Long An Dragon Fruit" includes: Tam Vu Dragon Fruit Cooperative, Thanh Phu Long Cooperative, Duong Xuan Cooperative and Long An Dragon Fruit Association.

Along with that, recently, the Provincial Agriculture Department has coordinated with localities to deploy training and transfer dragon fruit farming techniques in the direction of VietGAP and GlobalGAP for cooperatives, cooperative groups and farmers. Thereby, many cooperatives have built high-quality dragon fruit growing areas.

Typically, Tam Vu Dragon Fruit Cooperative (Chau Thanh district) has formed a dragon fruit growing area according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards with more than 40 members and a production area of more than 50 hectares. Director of Tam Vu Dragon Fruit Cooperative - Truong Quang An shared: "Thanks to good compliance with VietGAP and GlobalGAP processes and standards, the cooperative's dragon fruits are highly appreciated by purchasing companies. Currently, the cooperative continues to mobilize dragon fruit growers to join the cooperative and convert production according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards to stabilize output."

According to Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the whole province currently has nearly 9,000 hectares of dragon fruit, an increase of more than 640 hectares over the same period. Of which, more than 7,300 hectares of dragon fruit are bearing fruit, concentrated mainly in Chau Thanh, Tan Tru districts and Tan An city. The entire province has 241 growing area codes for export to markets such as Korea, Japan, United States, Australia, New Zealand, EU, Russia, UK, and China.

Director of Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Nguyen Thanh Truyen informed: In order to ensure a long-term, sustainable solution for the future development of dragon fruit, the Provincial Agriculture sector coordinates with localities to orient and create favorable conditions for cooperatives and businesses to coordinate with dragon fruit growers to produce according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP, organic standards, etc to increase export turnover, overcome regulations and technical barriers to achieve sustainable production and consumption chains.

In addition, Provincial Agriculture Department also advises the Provincial People's Committee to encourage processing enterprises to invest in building factories to produce diverse processed products from dragon fruit to partly contribute to solving the output problem when the harvest season is in full swing./.
