Busy taking care of flower crop
These days, farmers in Long Hoa commune, Can Duoc district are preparing to bring to the market the most beautiful flower pots. It is expected that this year, the whole commune will supply about 50,000 flower pots of all kinds for the Tet market in and outside the province.
In addition to supplying to traders, many farmers also transport them to flower markets in Binh Duong province and Ho Chi Minh City to sell, earning extra income. The main flowers supplied for Tet are chrysanthemums, marigolds, carnations, sunflowers, cockscombs, etc.
Mr. Nguyen Van Binh (Long Hoa commune, Can Duoc district) taking care of Tet flowers
Mr. Nguyen Van Binh (Long Hoa commune, Can Duoc district) said that in order for flowers to bloom on time for Tet, growers must prepare carefully from the stage of preparing the soil to the care. For flowers to grow well, big and firm, it requires meticulous care, regular fertilization, watering, ensuring humidity for the plants, etc.
“This year, I planted nearly 1,000 pots of chrysanthemums. The weather is quite favorable so the flowers bloom evenly and beautifully. In recent days, traders have started coming to the garden to buy flowers. I have just sold more than 400 pots of various types, the rest I will bring to Binh Duong province to sell. Hopefully the flowers will be in high demand and the selling price will be higher than last year so that I can celebrate a properous Tet" - Mr. Binh added.
To proactively supply vegetables to serve the Lunar New Year market, from the October (lunar calendar), farmers stared their crop. For tubers and fruits, due to the long growing time, they were planted earlier than vegetables. Most crops in preparation for Tet such as watermelon, bitter melon, cabbage, chili, green onion, cucumber, various vegetables, etc were planted early.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh (right, Phuoc Hau commune, Can Giuoc district) grows safe green onions to serve the Tet market
These days, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh's family (Phuoc Hau commune, Can Giuoc district) is always present in the field from early morning to late afternoon to take care of 0.3 hectares of green onions. It is known that the entire area of green onions of his family is produced in an organic way, safe for consumers' health.
Mr. Thanh shared: "Growing safe vegetables is not difficult, besides taking care of them, it is necessary to apply science and technology to production. In particular, farmers focus on using organic fertilizers instead of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. If the process is followed correctly, farmers can save on production costs, have high productivity, quality, and safety, so they can sell them at a higher price".
Every year, during Tet, most fruits increase in price, especially fruits offered to ancestors during Tet such as custard apple, mango, pomelo, etc.
These days, Mr. Vo Van Lam (Khanh Hung commune, Vinh Hung district) is actively taking care of 4 hectares of green-skinned pomelo to sell during Tet. If on normal days, pomelo costs from 30,000-35,000 VND/kg, it increases 2-3 times during Tet. It is expected that Mr. Lam's family will supply 7-10 tons of pomelo for the Tet market this year.
“Pomelo is often bought by people for display, so in addition to ensuring delicious, sweet, juicy quality, it is also necessary to pay attention to the appearance, the pomelo must be big, round, and has a beautiful color. Therefore, farmers need to choose beautiful fruits, cut off bad fruits when they are still small and proactively prevent pests, especially fruit borers,” Mr. Lam shared.
Focus on clean production
According to the provincial Department of Agriculture, the weather is quite favorable for pests to arise, so farmers need to pay attention to pests, apply pest control measures, use biological pesticides, pesticides on the permitted list, spray and isolate at the right time to ensure food safety.
In addition, farmers need to proactively irrigate to ensure adequate water supply for crops; regularly clean the garden, prune branches to limit the development of pests and diseases.
According to the Head of the Department of Cultivation, Plant Protection and Agricultural Product Quality Management of the province - Nguyen Van Cuong, in order for farmers to achieve high economic efficiency, the provincial Department of Agriculture will coordinate with localities to increase the transfer of science and technology, guide production according to safe processes, recommend the use of organic fertilizers to fertilize crops, and limit the use of pesticides to provide clean and safe products for consumers.
Tet is knocking our doors very soon, this is the time when the amount of goods and agricultural products consumed the most in the year. Therefore, farmers in the province are taking care of each of their products with the expectation of a bumper crop with good prices, contributing to a full and prosperous Tet holiday./.
