High-performance sports achieve many outstanding results

High performance sports in the province achieved many outstanding results in the period 2020-2022

According to the report of Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, after 4 years of implementing the High Performance Sports Development Project, although it has not achieved outstanding results as the goal of phase 1, the province's high-performance sports have shown potential internal resources in key sports such as swimming, athletics, women's volleyball and improvement in staffs, coaches and athletes. Athletes' competition level has improved a lot, and the number of medals won from national-level competitions has increased.

In particular, at the 31st SEA Games held in Vietnam, Long An made many important contributions to the overall success of the Vietnamese Sports Delegation with 2 Gold Medals, 3 Silver Medals and 1 Bronze Medal.

At the 8th National Sports Festival in 2018, Long An only won 2 Gold Medals, 4 Silver Medals, 15 Bronze Medals, ranked 43/63 provinces and cities. However at the 9th National Sports Festival in 2022, the Long An delegation made a leap with 5 Gold Medals, 8 Silver Medals and 6 Bronze Medals, rising to 35th place out of 63 provinces and cities.

Most recently, athlete Vo Thi My Tien competed very well and brought home 9 medals of all kinds including 1 Gold, 4 Silver and 4 Bronze, helping the Vietnamese Youth Swimming Team rank 5th at Asian all ages Championship in 2024.

Through implementing the Project, Long An has trained excellent athletes such as Thanh Thuy, Khanh Dan (volleyball), My Tien (swimming), Hoai Van (javelin throwing); especially training and fostering of young athletics talent Nhi Yen. Although she hasn't been practicing professionally over 2 years, Nhi Yen soon affirmed her talent with the Gold Medal in the 100m distance and Silver Medal in the 200m distance at the 9th National Sports Festival; the Silver Medal in the 200m distance and the Bronze Medal in the 100m distance at SEA Games 32.

Localities and sponsors reward outstanding athletes

However, besides the achieved results, the implementation of the 2020-2022 High Performance Sports Development Project still has limitations when the system of facilities for sports training and competition is currently degraded and has not been invested and  repaired; lack of special equipment, recovery room after practice. In addition to the prescribed regimes, the province currently does not have preferential regimes for talented athletes to motivate them to dedicate, train and compete for the province.

At the conference, Secretary of Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of Provincial People's Council - Nguyen Van Duoc recognized and praised the efforts of the Sports sector, especially the efforts to overcome difficulties of coaches and athletes.

He also suggested that the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to complete the project and advise the Provincial People's Committee in building preferential mechanisms and policies to attract athletes. At the same time, the Department needs to advise the Provincial People's Committee to arrange funds to repair facilities, ensuring the needs to serve training and sports competitions before building the new Sport Training and Competition Center.

In addition, at the conference, Vice Chairman of Provincial People's Committee - Pham Tan Hoa also proposed that the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, People's Committees of districts, towns and cities continue to thoroughly grasp the orientation of the Provincial Party Committee, direction of the Provincial People's Committee and coordination with departments, branches and localities to promote implementation of the Project's tasks in the following years, in particular, focus on building and developing various types of sports clubs in schools and districts; invest and pay attention to the quality of Phu Dong Sports Festival, Sports Festivals, etc.

In particular, the Sports sector needs to continue to strongly develop high-performance sports that are traditional strengths of the province and sports that can be developed as well as research, propose, and supplement investment in a number of new sports which have the ability to achieve high results at national and international tournaments.

On this occasion, Provincial People's Committee awarded a Certificate of Merit to athlete Vo Thi My Tien, awarded 200 million VND to Long An Football Team; Secretary of Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of Provincial People's Council donated 100 million VND to the VTV Binh Dien Long An Women's Volleyball Team, 50 million VND to the Lavie Long An Men's Volleyball Team and 50 million VND to the Long An Football Team; Sponsors and localities also gave gifts and rewards to excellent athletes./.
