National Highway 62 to be upgraded and expanded in September 2026

In a written reply to voters in Tay Ninh Province, the Ministry of Construction confirmed that National Highway 62 will be upgraded and expanded from September 2026, with completion expected in 2028.

National Highway 62 is damaged and degraded

According to the Ministry of Construction, National Highway 62 is under review for upgrading and renovation to meet Grade III standards, with a 12-metre roadbed and an 11-metre carriageway. The project forms part of the upgrade and renovation of 3 national highways (53, 62, and 91B) designed to enhance regional connectivity and improve climate resilience in the Mekong Delta.

The Prime Minister approved the project under Decision No. 1445/QĐ-TTg on June 30, 2025. Total investment for the 3 highways is estimated at nearly VND 9.3 trillion, including almost VND 3 trillion in counterpart funds, with the remainder financed through World Bank loans.

The upgrade of National Highway 62 will span 69 km, running from the Ho Chi Minh City–Trung Luong Expressway interchange (Km4+200) to the Binh Hiep International Border Gate (Km74) in Tay Ninh Province.

The Ministry of Construction has tasked the Vietnam Road Administration with preparing the project’s feasibility study and completing investment procedures in accordance with regulations. Construction is scheduled to commence in September 2026 and be completed in 2028. Upon completion, the highway will be handed over to the Tay Ninh Provincial People’s Committee for management.

The Ministry of Construction further noted that, under Decree No. 165/2024/NĐ-CP dated December 26, 2024, guiding the implementation of certain provisions of the Road Law and Article 77 of the Road Traffic Safety and Order Law, it has transferred the management of road transport infrastructure assets to the Tay Ninh Provincial People’s Committee. This includes National Highways 22, 22B, 50, and N2. Following the transfer, the provincial government will oversee the management, operation, maintenance, and investment of these routes

National Highway 62, though narrow and in poor condition, faces growing traffic demand

National Highway 62 is a vital route linking the centre of Tay Ninh Province (Long An Ward) with the Dong Thap Muoi region. It is also the sole road connection to neighbouring Cambodia through the Binh Hiep International Border Gate.

However, since it was opened to traffic in 1999, the highway has never undergone major repairs, with only patchwork fixes applied to severely damaged sections. The road is currently just six metres wide, lacks a median strip, and suffers extensive deterioration. Traffic volumes have risen sharply, especially during public holidays and festivals, leaving the route overloaded and prone to frequent congestion.

For many years, voters in Tay Ninh Province (formerly Long An) have repeatedly called for the urgent upgrade and expansion of National Highway 62 to foster socio-economic development in the Dong Thap Muoi region and strengthen trade connectivity with Cambodia./.
