Prospects from testing and experimenting with new rice varieties

In order to find new rice varieties with high yield, quality and good resistance to add to the variety structure of Long An province, recently, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has focused on testing and experimenting and has initially identified a number of suitable rice varieties that can be widely replicated in the coming time.

Holding rice grains in his hands, Mr. Nguyen Van Long - a member of Khanh Hung High-Tech Agricultural Cooperative (Khanh Hung Commune, Vinh Hung District), said that this winter-spring crop, with support in seeds and techniques, he decided to test-plant the new rice variety Ha Phat 3 researched and selected by Hung Thinh Seed Production and Trading Company Limited. This rice variety has a growing period of about 95 days with many advantages such as easy cultivation, good resistance to pests and diseases, high yield, etc.

“Although this is the first crop, the results of this Ha Phat 3 rice variety have exceeded my expectations. This rice variety is very suitable for the weather and soil conditions here. The rice plants are healthy, blooming with golden yellow flowers and heavy grains. According to the company's assessment, the expected yield is 8.5-9 tons/hectare, but with my practical experience, the yield must be 9.5 tons/hectare or more” - Mr. Long shared.

According to the Director of Khanh Hung High-Tech Agricultural Cooperative - Pham Van Nghia, in the context that many traditional rice varieties show signs of degeneration, rice is prone to lodging, susceptible to pests and diseases, Ha Phat 3 rice variety shows outstanding advantages such as strong plants, strong tillering, concentrated flowering, short growing period (from 95-100 days), high percentage of solid grains, high yield. In particular, this is a rice variety with good resistance to blast disease and leaf rollers.

In the coming crops, the cooperative will expand the production scale of this rice variety. Also in the Winter-Spring crop this year, the Provincial Agricultural Extension and Services Center coordinated with the Mekong Delta High-Tech Agricultural Research Institute, Dong Thap Muoi Agricultural Research and Development Center to conduct trials and demonstrations of 8 glutinous rice varieties, 14 rice varieties and 4 trial rice varieties at the Hoa Phu Agricultural Research and Service Center (Chau Thanh district).

Most rice varieties have a growing period of 90-105 days. Through testing, some rice varieties have shown their outstanding features such as the ability to bloom well, have strong plants, and are tolerant to salinity and acidity such as Hatri 10, DTM 62, nHatri 190, MLA1, PLA2, etc.

Vo Thanh Nghia, Deputy Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension and Service Center, said: “Through surveys and field assessments, most of the rice varieties tested have high yields, are resistant to many dangerous pests and diseases, and the new rice variety PLA2 is also resistant to acidity-contaminated soil. All rice varieties tested this time will continue to be monitored, with indicators of yield, rice quality, etc. collected to serve as a basis for more accurate assessment of the quality of the rice varieties.

At the same time, from these rice varieties, the center will continue to select 2-3 outstanding rice varieties to continue testing and demonstrating in different ecological zones in the province. If they meet actual production requirements, the Center will submit them to the Department of Agriculture and Environment for consideration to add them to the province's variety structure,” added Mr. Vo Thanh Nghia.

In agricultural production, varieties are a key factor in improving productivity, quality and economic efficiency. However, in recent years, some rice varieties have shown signs of degeneration, being susceptible to pests and diseases. At the same time, due to the impact of climate change, long-term rice varieties are no longer suitable. Therefore, testing and experimenting to find new rice varieties with high yield, high quality, good resistance to pests and diseases, and short and extremely short growing time is necessary so that when new rice varieties are put into mass production, they will be stable, achieve long-term results and be favored by the market./.
