Workshop on promoting development of Vietnam's border trade infrastructure in Long An

On November 9, Long An Department of Industry and Trade coordinated with People's Committee of Kien Tuong town to organize a workshop on promoting the development of Vietnam's border trade infrastructure in Long An. Attending the workshop were Vice Chairman of Kien Tuong People's Committee - La Van Dan; Deputy Director of Department of Industry and Trade - Chau Thi Le; Deputy Head of the Management Board of the Provincial Economic Zone - Vo Ngoc Dinh, representatives of the Customs Department, border districts, a number of enterprises inside and outside the province.

Deputy Director of Department of Industry and Trade - Chau Thi Le said that the workshop was organized to create basic solutions and timely respond to the orientation of socio-economic development in the border area to become a dynamic economic region. Thereby, it help exploit the potential to develop the land into a high-tech agricultural production area; form and develop industrial zones, clusters, logistics centers along the border; build and develop border gate economy. The Department of Industry and Trade wishes to work with businesses, representatives from departments, agencies, People's Committees of districts and towns to study, exchange, and propose preeminent orientations, programs and solutions to promote the development of border economic infrastructure in Long An.

Long An is assessed to have conditions for harmonious development of industry, agriculture, trade and services as well as potential and advantages for border trade development with 133km of border line contiguous to two provinces Svei Rieng and Prey-Veng, Kingdom of Cambodia. Long An Border Gate Economic Zone was established by the Prime Minister under Decision No.07/2010/QD-TTg dated January 25, 2010 with a total area of 13,080 hectares. He also approved the general planning on construction of Long An border gate economic zone by 2030. Long An border gate economic zone is an important economic corridor axis located in the west of Long An, an important trade point in the Dong Thap Muoi region associated with trans-Asian traffic routes.

The border economic development goal of Long An by 2030 is becoming a dynamic economic region, exploiting the potential to develop into a high-tech agricultural production area as well as making the border gate economic zone an economic nucleus in promoting the socio-economic development of Long An and Mekong Delta region through promoting industrial production, trade and cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia.

Participating in the workshop, delegates focused on solutions to develop border trade infrastructure. In particular, the current state picture of the border infrastructure of the province, the list of border trade infrastructure that needs to be called for investment, the current status of cross-border import and export activities of Long An - the role of commercial infrastructure in import and export activities were mainly focused on.

Other issues such as the status and orientation of investment attraction, border infrastructure development in Kien Tuong and Duc Hue; status and operation, investment attraction at Binh Hiep International Border Gate; businesses perspective on promoting the development of border trade infrastructure, etc were also focused and discussed by delegates, contributing to promoting the development of border trade infrastructure in Long An in particular and Vietnam in general./.
