Application of high technology on rice shows effectiveness

Rice is one of four crops chosen by Long An province to implement the High-tech Agricultural Development Program associated with restructuring the Agricultural sector. After a period of implementation, up to now, the whole province has built and maintained 56,142.5 hectares of high-tech rice fields, reaching 93.6% of the plan for the 2016-2025 period. However, the important thing is to gradually change farmers' production practices.

Many positive changes

In 2016, My Lac commune, Thu Thua district was chosen by the National Agricultural Extension Center as the site to implement the high-tech application model on rice. Total area of implementation is 4 hectares.

After a period of implementation, people realized that the high-tech application model on rice brought practical results, contributing to solving the problem of labor shortage in rural areas, reducing production costs, and increasing profits in the cultivated area.

Farmers in My Lac commune, Thu Thua district use drones to spray pesticides and spread fertilizer on rice

Therefore, after the National Agricultural Extension Center summarized the model, the Commune Farmers' Association advised the Party Committee and Commune People's Committee to continue maintaining and replicating the high-tech application model on rice. As a result, up to now, the commune has maintained and replicated 56 hectares of high-tech rice fields with 27 participating farmer households.

The highlight of the commune's high-tech application model on rice is the implementation of cluster sowing, transplanting, rowing and drone equipment methods. These help farmers reduce the amount of seeds sown by 40-60% compared to traditional sowing methods.

In addition to maintaining high-tech sowing models, farmers participating in the model also apply 100% of drones to spray chemicals and fertilize.

In particular, farmers participating in the model also boldly invested in drone equipment to provide spraying and fertilizing services for surrounding areas. Currently, the commune has 2 drone cooperative groups, with more than 20 drones equipped by the people themselves.

According to farmers here, when using drones to spray pesticides and fertilize, farmers can reduce costs by 700,000-1,000,000 VND/hectare/crop. Rice productivity and output are equal to or higher than traditional farming methods.

If in previous years, when the rice harvest season came, with an area of 11 hectares, Mr. Duong Quoc Son's family (Cau Lon hamlet, My Lac commune, Thu Thua district) had to hire for workers to harvest. Now, he leisurely chats, receives guests, watches the harvesters and rice tractors work and just waits for the traders to come and buy them.

Mr. Son said: "Farmers now produce rice with much less difficulty than before. Machines can be used to support and replace most production stages."

Mr. Duong Quoc Son (My Lac commune, Thu Thua district) applies mechanization to rice harvesting

Similar to Mr. Son, Mr. Tran Van Ngam (My Lac commune, Thu Thua district) has also promoted high-tech application in production in recent years. If Mr. Son's rice field is sown using a drone, Mr. Ngam's rice field chooses the transplanting method. This helped him reduce 40kg of rice seeds/hectare.

In the 2023-2024 Winter-Spring rice crop, his rice yield reached 8 tons/ha. After deducting all costs, his family had a profit of about 40 million VND/hectare.

In addition to bringing mechanization to the fields, farmers in My Lac commune also apply the measures "3 reductions, 3 increases", "1 must, 5 reductions", increasing the application of organic fertilizers, etc. And when harvesting rice, farmers do not sell straw, do not burn the fields, but hire machines to chop the stubble, then spread biological fertilizers to create humus for the soil after cultivation.

Chairman of My Lac Commune Farmers' Association - Le Hoang Khanh informed: "Recently, through My Lac Agricultural Cooperative, the association called on individuals and businesses to participate in linking production and consumption of agricultural products; coordinate with district and provincial authorities to open training courses on applying high technology to rice production for farmers, thereby gradually changing farmers' awareness of production, helping farmers gradually transition from traditional production to mechanized applications and progressive agricultural production processes."

Many profits

Agricultural land in Tan Dong commune, Thanh Hoa district is heavily contaminated with alum, combined with low flood water in recent years leading to discoloration, so rice productivity is increasingly low.

Facing this situation, the Provincial Agricultural Service Center chose Tan Dong Agricultural Service Cooperative to implement the VietGAP rice production site model with an area of 50 hectares.

When participating in the model, in the first year, farmers are supported with 50% of certified rice varieties, 50% organic fertilizer, 50% of biological pesticides and 50% of the cost of spraying using drones.

In the second year, farmers are supported with 30% of certified rice varieties, 30% organic fertilizer, 30% of biological drugs and 30% of the cost of spraying using drones.

Mr. Le Van Day is one of the core members of Tan Dong Agricultural Service Cooperative, boldly participating in the VietGAP rice production site model.

Mr. Day shared: "After nearly 2 years of participating in the model, although the rice yield is not much higher than outside the model, I am still determined to implement it, because this model not only has economic value but also carries humane values, contributing to protecting consumers' health."

Director of Tan Dong Agricultural Service Cooperative - Huynh Van Chan said: "The use of certified rice varieties, sparse sowing, row sowing and the use of microbial fertilizers help rice to be less susceptible to pests and diseases, providing safer products for consumers and contributing to environmental protection.

The production process "1 must, 5 reductions", "3 reductions, 3 increases" helps save a lot of costs by reducing seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and labor. Since then, cooperative members have actively participated in implementation."

Applying technology to agricultural production in general and rice cultivation in particular is a superior solution, creating a new direction in the current changing agricultural situation. This is considered an inevitable direction of modern agriculture./.
