Long An implements '1 million hectares of high quality rice' project

On May 29, Director of Long An Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Nguyen Thanh Truyen chaired a conference to implement the project "Sustainable development of 1 million hectares specializing in high-quality and low emissions rice cultivation associated with green growth in Mekong Delta region until 2030" in the province. Attending the conference were Deputy Director of Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) - Le Thanh Tung, representatives of local People's Committees and cooperatives participating in the project.

Long An implements 1 million hectares of high quality rice project

According to the implementation plan, by 2030, the province will form 125,000 hectares of specialized high-quality and low-emission rice growing areas associated with reorganizing the production system according to the value chain, applying new sustainable farming processes to increase value and sustainable development of the rice industry, improve production, business efficiency, income and life of rice growers, protect the environment, adapt to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to implementing Vietnam's international commitments.

Specifically, the project is implemented in 8 districts and towns of the province: Tan Hung, Vinh Hung, Moc Hoa, Tan Thanh, Thanh Hoa, Duc Hue, Thu Thua and Kien Tuong town. It is also implemented in 2 phases. Phase 1 (2024-2025) focuses on consolidating the existing areas of the Vietnam Sustainable Agriculture Transformation (VnSAT) project in the province of 60,000 hectares. Phase 2 (2026-2030) specifically identifies key areas to develop high-quality and low emissions rice areas outside the VnSAT Project area and will expand an additional 65,000 hectares to target to the goal of 125,000 hectares in the province.

The project "Sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality and low emissions rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta until 2030" of the Prime Minister is being deployed and implemented by Long An province and has initially achieved many positive signs.

Speaking at the conference, Director of Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Nguyen Thanh Truyen emphasized: The important goal of the project is to reorganize rice production towards sustainability, forming large-scale commercial rice production areas with systematic investment and value chain links, thereby improving the value of rice grains and increasing income for rice farmers. At the same time, the project also aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, become environmentally friendly associating with green growth.

In addition, to effectively implement the project, he requested localities to identify areas that meet the criteria, register and develop a plan to implement the project; arrange funding to complete initial conditions to implement the project in 2024 and following years.

In addition, localities also need to proactively advise and propose mechanisms and policies to attract investment from businesses and support cooperatives to participate in the project, aiming to develop the value chain of sustainable rice production./.
