Farmers apply mechanization in production
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Long An province, up to now, the whole province has 59,672 hectares of rice using modern agricultural techniques, reaching 94.5% of the plan for 2025. Of which, the whole province has built a rice area using modern agricultural techniques that meets export standards with 23 models, covering an area of 4,770 hectares. The model of rice production using modern agricultural techniques led by the province has implemented 21 models on 1,050 hectares; The model led by the districts has implemented 289 models with 17,327 hectares by the end of 2023.
In the 2022-2023 Winter-Spring crop, Vinh Loi Agricultural Service Cooperative (Ca Sach hamlet, Vinh Loi commune, Tan Hung district) was chosen as a pilot model for rice production following VietGAP. The area of implementation is 50 hectares with 15 participating households. Accordingly, the model will be implemented for 3 consecutive years, 1 crop per year, from 2022 to 2024.
Director of Vinh Loi Agricultural Service Cooperative - Nguyen Ba Thanh An said: “When participating in the model, farmers will be supported with seeds, organic fertilizers, drone spraying services, etc. In the first year of implementing the model, farmers will be supported with 50% of the cost with a maximum of 300 million VND/model; in the second year, they will be supported with 30% of the implementation cost with a maximum of 200 million VND/model; in the third year, they will be supported with 20% of the implementation cost with a maximum of 100 million VND/model. Through implementation, cooperative members have changed their awareness, focusing on using organic fertilizers; reducing the number of times pesticides are sprayed, especially applying the correct production process according to the commitment with the enterprise to consume the output”.
The rice yield of the pilot models is about 500 kg/hectare higher than the model outside
Given the effectiveness of the pilot model of high-tech rice production, farmers continue to maintain the model after 3 years of implementation, especially applying and expanding the high-tech rice area to about 32,995 ha.
Through the models, farmers use certified seeds in 85-90% of the total sown area of the province; the rice area with GAP certification is more than 1,150 ha with an output of 13,283 tons/year; the amount of sown seeds is reduced from 150 kg/ha to 100 kg/ha; mechanization of land preparation, harvesting, and drying of rice reaches 100%; sowing and planting with 3-function machines reached 90%, using more than 300 unmanned aerial vehicles, etc.
Ms. Le Thi Minh Thy (Tan Binh commune, Tan Thanh district) shared: "Participating in the pilot model of high-tech rice production implemented by the district, my family learned many lessons in production. When the model ended, we still continued to maintain it".
"Thanks to that, the amount of seeds sown was reduced from 150kg/ha to 120kg/hectare; at the same time, applying technical solutions, bringing mechanization to the fields, reducing production costs by about 15% compared to outside the model. The average yield is equal to or higher than outside the model by about 500kg/hectare, the average profit is higher than outside the model by 1.5-2 million VND/hectare" - Ms. Thy said.
By changing the mindset and methods from traditional to applying science and technology, rice farmers have increased productivity and profits on the same cultivated area. This affirms that the Agricultural Development Program for High-Technology Application on Rice has brought many positive and promising results, especially contributing to the province's rice output increasing dramatically, reaching an average of more than 2.8 million tons of rice/year, especially in 2023, the rice output exceeded 3 million tons.
Deputy Director of the Provincial Agricultural Service Center - Vo Thanh Nghia informed: "The center coordinates to promote information and propaganda work on the effectiveness of high-technology application on rice; continues to transfer science and technology; etc, aiming to complete the plans and goals set by 2030. In particular, by 2030, the province strives to have 125,000 hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice"./.
