Kien Tuong aims for bumper winter-spring rice crop 2021-2022

The People's Committee of Kien Tuong town, Long An province informed that the agricultural production continues to develop although the Covid-19 pandemic adversely affected the production at a large scale in 2021, causing certain difficulties in purchasing and transportation in addition to frequent price reduction. The town's total sowing area for the whole year was nearly 31,000 hectares, reaching 107 percent of the original plan while the average yield was 61.3 quintals per hectare and the average profit was over 45 million VND per hectare.

In particular, the town's agricultural sector has continued to deploy high-tech production models. In the Winter-Spring crop in the period 2020-2021, the town deployed 2 models in Binh Tan and Binh Hiep communes; coordinated to deploy VietGAP-oriented rice production in Tuyen Thanh commune, and produced high-quality rice seeds in Hung Thanh commune and many other science - technology application models with the purpose of yielding higher efficiency than traditional production.

Especially, for the winter-spring crop 2021 - 2022, the sowing area in the town was nearly 14,500 hectares, reaching 100 percent of the plan. Currently, the households have harvested about 4,000 hectares of rice, yielding 6.5-7 tons per hectare; the rest of the area is still in the stage of cultivation, flowering and preparation for harvest. However, on the first days of the year, the risk of rice diseases tended to increase, especially on the paddy fields that were in the growing and flowering stage. At the same time, the unpredictable weather conditions were also one of the major causes of pests and diseases on rice, especially sticky rice varieties, fragrant rice and rice on dense sowing fields with heavy nitrogen fertilizer, affecting the productivity and quality of the crops.

Faced with those situations, right from the very beginning of the year, the leaders of the town together with specialized functional departments directly went to localities to inspect and direct agricultural production, aiming for a successful crop. Tuyen Thanh commune is one of the key areas of agricultural production in the town with many models of hi-tech application in production.

The Chairman of Tuyen Thanh Commune People's Committee, Huynh Thanh Vinh said: "Currently, there is the totality of about 2,700 hectares of rice production in the ripening stage, preparing for harvest in the local area. There are 1,924 hectares of farming areas applying hi-tech production. Most farmers who have applied these production models produce more rice productivity than using traditional methods. The locality is putting an emphasis on developing some more production models to bring more efficiency to farmers”.

Based on the actual inspection of agricultural production, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Kien Tuong town,  Nguyen Van Vu suggested that the Agriculture sector, specialized functional departments and localities should strengthen inspection work and advise farmers to actively take care of the winter-spring rice crop, and especially to prevent harmful pests and rice diseases.

Besides that, he suggested that departments and localities should continue to strengthen the quality inspection of fertilizer and pesticides; timely examine and repair infrastructure works to ensure effective agricultural production, aiming for a successful crop./.
