More than 80% of seedless lemon are for export

According to Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ben Luc district, Long An province - Le Van Nam, the district has proactively deployed and implemented the province's breakthrough program on agricultural development applying high technology associated with restructuring the Agriculture sector, initially gaining positive results, especially on lemons.

More than 80% of Ben Luc district's seedless lemon production is processed for export

Currently, the entire Ben Luc district has about 6,950 hectares of lemon growing, of which the fruit bearing area is 6,600 hectares, mainly seedless lemons, average yield of 160 quintals/hectare, output of about 105,600 tons/year. In 2023, the district developed an additional 460 hectares (planned 445 hectares) of high-tech lemon trees, reaching 103.4% of the provincial plan. Up to now, the area of high-tech lemons in the entire district is 2,341 hectares (the province will have 2,700 hectares allocated by 2025).

In order for lemon to become a key crop, the district's Agriculture sector has proactively and coordinated with related units from production to consumption.

Currently, more than 80% of seedless lemon production grown in the district is processed for export. Therefore, the price is always stable, lemon growers have an average income of 1 hectare of lemons higher than other crops (nearly 100 million VND/year).

In the district, there are many businesses that purchase, process and export lemons stably according to the model of linking production and consumption of output. A typical example of association in lemon production and consumption is Fruit Repuplic Company Limited (Can Tho city) with lemon farmers in the district in many communes: Luong Hoa, Luong Binh, Binh Duc, etc.

The Fruit Repuplic Company Limited always buys lemons 3,000-5,000 VND/kg higher than the market price. Currently, the company participates in purchasing and exporting lemons to many markets around the world, of which the EU market, the Middle East, etc account for 15% of stable output.

In addition to the area where Fruit Repuplic Company Limited has linked directly with farmers, the district's Agriculture Department has also sent a list of areas for implementing high-tech application from the support model from the district budget to introduce nearly 500 hectares of lemons to this company (if they meet the Company's requirements) for export as well as domestic consumption.

According to Mr. Le Van Nam, the High-Tech Agricultural Development Program associated with restructuring the Agriculture sector is an orientation consistent with current trends. In Ben Luc district, it has been effective on lemon trees.

To get that result, propaganda and advocacy work is organized by the district's Agriculture sector through production models following GAP standards, organic direction, food safety, etc to meet the market demand, especially for export.

In 2024, the district's Agriculture sector will continue to accompany farmers to achieve 520 hectares of high-tech lemons to reach 2,700 hectares by 2025 according to the provincial target.

At the same time, the work of propaganda, guidance, and transfer of science and technology to farmers producing lemons using high technology continues to be implemented./.
