Non-biodegradable plastic bags limited to use in commercial activities

According to Director of the Department of Industry and Trade - Nguyen Anh Viet, plastic waste is a hot, global issue. The number of plastic packaging and plastic bags used is increasing in Vietnam, leading to an increase in waste each year while the proportion of packaging waste and plastic bags that are not reused or buried accounts for about 5 -8 percent, equivalent to about 2.5 million tons per year.

The average amount of plastic consumed by the industry and trade sector tends to increase to meet the needs of production and business, while there is a shortage of plastic recycling and waste treatment facilities, outdated technology, and ineffective garbage classification at source.

A commitment is signed to limit the use of disposable plastic products and does not use non-biodegradable plastic bags in commercial activities

The Prime Minister has issued many directives and goals that "Stores, markets and supermarkets in urban areas will strive not to use disposable plastic products by 2021; the whole nation will not use disposable plastic products by 2025".

The Industry and Trade sector has taken many measures to promote the initiatives for environmental protection to reduce plastic emissions from production to distribution and consumption.

The Department of Industry and Trade has strengthened coordination with relevant units to implement solutions and activities to promote the reduction of local plastic waste emissions, propaganda to raise people’s awareness and businesses about the harm of plastic waste, encourage to separate waste at source for collection and treatment according to regulations. It builds and launches the movement against solid waste, plastic waste in the industry and trade in the locality, and mobilizes businesses in the industry to sign commitments or action statements against plastic waste.

Workshop informs specifically, propose solutions to organize the implementation effectively, minimize plastic waste, especially plastic bags, contribute to environmental protection.

At the seminar, some delegates delivered speeches, proposed action solutions to limit plastic waste, plastic bags and minimize the impact and effects on the environment.

In addition, the units signed a commitment to limit the use of disposable plastic products and not to use non-biodegradable plastic bags in commercial activities./.
