Striving to improve and enhance Provincial Green Index

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Long An province is focusing on synchronously implementing solutions to improve and enhance the Provincial Green Index (PGI), towards green growth and sustainable development.

The province strives to be in the top 10 on the national PGI rankings in 2023

Gradually improving PGI

According to Deputy Director of Department of Natural Resources and Environment - Nguyen Tan Thuan, to improve PGI, in 2022, in addition to organizing 2 training classes to implement the Law on Environmental Protection and guiding documents under the Law, localities also propagated to people and businesses to raise awareness of environmental protection. Currently, the Department operates 6 automatic stations, including 3 air stations and 3 water stations, monitoring 42 automatic monitoring stations for emissions and wastewater of businesses with large waste output and transmissing to the Center of Department of Natural Resources and Environment every 5 minutes to promptly detect and have solutions to treat and prevent pollution. In addition, every quarter, the Department conducts surface water quality monitoring on main rivers, canals, and air environments in residential areas, industrial parks, and major traffic intersections to evaluate background environmental quality.

In 2022, the Department has inspected 54 production and business units in the province in the field of environment. In receiving investment, the Department closely coordinates with the Department of Planning and Investment and the Provincial Economic Zone Management Board to conduct a preliminary assessment of the impact of investment projects that have the risk of adversely affecting the environment at a high level in accordance with Clause 3, Article 28 of the Law on Environmental Protection as well as emphasizing the motto of not exchanging the environment for the economy; selects and prioritizes investors with a sense of environmental protection and green projects with high technology, developing clean industry, using renewable energy, and reducing environmental pollution.

Focusing on synchronously implementation of solutions

In 2022, for the first time, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry officially launched the PGI investigation. According to the PGI announcement results in 2022, Long An reached 15.04 points, ranked 28/63 provinces and cities in the country and ranked 3rd in the Mekong Delta. According to the 2023 plan, the province strives to rank in the top 10 on the national PGI rankings. To achieve that goal, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment focuses on synchronously implementing solutions to improve and enhance PGI.

Mr. Nguyen Tan Thuan affirmed that, first of all, the Department focuses on effectively operating automatic environmental monitoring stations, evaluating environmental quality to promptly detect and have solutions to prevent and handle pollution. In particular, the Department requires businesses with large waste sources to install and connect data from automatic environmental monitoring stations to a central station to monitor the quality of waste before releasing them into the environment, do not let waste exceed environmental standards, do not put into operation projects with unfinished environmental protection

Along with that, the Department coordinates with relevant agencies and district-level People's Committees to strengthen the inspection and control of solid waste, wastewater and emissions; prevent and respond to environmental incidents; conserve nature and biodiversity, promote environmental protection in exploiting and using sustainable resources.

The Department also focuses on further promoting communication, improving capacity and awareness off manufacturers and consumers to build awareness of environmental protection, thereby, contributing to improving the capacity to adapt to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, encouraging the greening of production and business models through specific policies and support programs.

At the same time, when evaluating the industries to receive investment as well as the businesses that have been received, the Department also recommends businesses to focus on innovating production technology and new technology to help implement circular economy model, reducing pollution, treating and recycling waste to regenerate raw materials, preserving nature and biodiversity, avoiding overexploitation of resources,etc, thereby, gradually improving and enhancing PGI in 2023 and the following years - Mr. Nguyen Tan Thuan said./.

The Department also focuses on further promoting communication, improving capacity and awareness off manufacturers and consumers to build awareness of environmental protection, thereby, contributing to improving the capacity to adapt to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, encouraging the greening of production and business models through specific policies and support programs.
