Tan An in the old days
The place name Tan An first appeared in the Nguyen Dynasty's land register in 1832 when King Minh Mang established Tan An prefecture. At that time, Tan An prefecture belonged to Gia Dinh province. When the French colonialists invaded the country, in 1868, they moved the prefecture to Vung Gu (now the location of the provincial People's Committee headquarters) in Binh Lap village.
Under the colonial regime, the socio-economic situation changed a lot. Tan An's infrastructure was built to serve the local government. The Saigon - My Tho railway was built through Tan An.
A number of roads were built and upgraded from Tan An to Cho Lon - Saigon, Tan An to My Tho, Tan An to Go Cong, making Tan An more convenient for communication and travel and creating more social changes. Tan An gradually became a political and cultural center of the region.
After the success of the August Revolution, according to the structure of the revolutionary government, in 1949, the name Tan An town was officially introduced according to the Resolution of the Party Congress of Chau Thanh district (Tan An province) - a part of Binh Lap commune was separated to establish an administrative unit (equivalent to commune level) named Tan An town.
After 1975, Long An province separated Binh Lap commune of Chau Thanh district, establishing Tan An town including 4 wards: 1, 2, 3, 4. Tan An town became a district-level unit.
In 1983, according to the decision of the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Tan An town received 3 more communes: Nhon Thanh Trung, Binh Tam, An Vinh Ngai separated from Vam Co district and 3 communes: Huong Tho Phu, Khanh Hau, Loi Binh Nhon separated from Ben Thu district.
In 1994, Ward 5 was established on the basis of separating from some areas of Huong Tho Phu commune and Nhon Thanh Trung commune. In 1998, Ward 6 was established on the basis of separating from a part of Loi Binh Nhon commune.
In 2006, Ward 7 was established on the basis of adjusting the land of An Vinh Ngai commune and Binh Tam commune; Tan Khanh ward was established on the basis of separating from Khanh Hau commune and establishing Khanh Hau ward on the basis of the remaining land area of Khanh Hau commune.
