Agriculture sector strives to implement tasks right from the beginning of the year
Right from the early days of 2023, the Agriculture sector of Long An province focused on developing plans and synchronously implementing tasks and solutions in an effort to accomplish the set goals.
Efforts to overcome difficulties
The prices of agricultural inputs, gasoline, and oil increased, so production costs increased. As a result, farmers' profits were low. In addition, due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, the output of agricultural products was not stable, and the consumption of products faced many difficulties. In particular, in 2022, the area of dragon fruit was reduced; farmers were not interested in investment and care; dragon fruit output by the end of December 2022 decreased by more than 21% over the same period.
The province continues to attract businesses to invest in deep processing to increase the value of agricultural products
According to the forecast, in 2023, agricultural production will continue to face difficulties due to erratic weather, agricultural product consumption instability, diseases in crops and livestock, etc. At the same time, production costs have increased due to the fact that the global supply chain has not been fully reconnected after the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic and political upheaval in the world. Facing the above difficulties, the Agriculture sector proactively coordinated with relevant departments, branches and affiliated agencies to find solutions and strive to complete the set targets in 2023.
Specifically, the sector strives to achieve a growth rate of 1.5%; rice production will reach 2.7 million tons, of which high-quality rice will account for 65% of total output. In addition, the province strives to have 9 more new-style rural communes, 12 advanced new-style rural communes; 2 new model rural communes; one more advanced new-style rural district. 60% of rural households will use clean water meeting current technical standards. The province will plant 500ha of production forest after exploitation and plant 1,546,000 scattered trees of all kinds.
The 2022-2023 Winter-Spring crop is the main rice crop of the year, contributing over 70% of the whole year's rice production. Therefore, in order to reach 2.7 million tons of rice in 2023, the provincial Agriculture sector plans for the 2022-2023 Winter-Spring crop early to ensure both "avoiding" drought and saltwater intrusion in the southern districts and maintaining high-quality rice production in the Dong Thap Muoi districts of the province. Up to now, the whole province has sown over 224,740ha of Winter-Spring rice, reaching 102% of the plan, equaling 100.33% over the same period. Of which, 54,380ha were harvested, the yield was 62.6 quintals/ha with an output of 340,500 tons.

In Vinh Hung, the whole district sowed over 28,580ha of the 2022-2023 Winter-Spring rice crop. The main varieties of rice grown are OM4900, OM7347, Dai Thom 8, Nang Hoa 9, OM18, and so on. Currently, farmers have harvested nearly 340ha, the yield is 55 quintals/ha, selling price is 7,300 VND/kg; After deducting costs, farmers have higher profits than the previous year by 4-6 million VND/ha. However, rice from tillering stage to flowering stage has many pests. In particular, the most dangerous is the rice stem gall midge, about 170ha of rice is infected by 25-30% and 230ha is infected by 10-20%.
Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Vinh Hung district - Le Quoc Bon said: "In the 2022-2023 Winter-Spring crop, the district has 6 businesses to associate production and ensure rice consumption for farmers, with a total area over 4,587ha. The district agriculture sector continues to monitor the weather to promptly advise and guide farmers in proactively preventing and responding to pests on crops and livestock, especially the rice stem gall midge
In Tan Hung district, in the 2022-2023 Winter-Spring crop, farmers sowed nearly 36,700 hectares of rice. At present, the places where farmers sow early have harvested, most of the areas have yield of 6-7 tons/ha, the selling price is also quite high, so farmers are very excited. According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tan Hung district, this year, although the price of agricultural inputs has increased, the weather is quite favorable, the pests and diseases are not significant, so the production cost of farmers is lower than the previous crops, the yield is higher, and the farmers have good profits.
Strive to achieve the targets
In order to build the province's agriculture to develop quickly in a green and sustainable direction; fully exploit the potential and advantages of the province, the Agriculture sector has proposed many solutions, in which, focusing on implementing and implementing the plan to restructure the sector in the period of 2021-2025, with orientation to 2030; mobilized many resources to invest in the development of high-tech agriculture, aiming to form supply chains and upgrade value chains of commodities; produced agriculture associated with processing industry and consumption market; protected the environment and responded to climate change.
The cultivation according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards is the solution to improve the output of dragon fruit
In addition, the sector has focused on effectively implementing the Project on Development of Hi-tech Agriculture in association with the restructuring of the Agriculture sector; accelerated the progress of building 6 production areas applying high technology (rice, vegetables, dragon fruit, lemon, brackish shrimp and beef) to create a breakthrough in the development of the province until 2025; promoted mechanization and industrialization in agricultural production. The sector has also focused on implementing the National Target Program on New Rural Construction and continued to organize and effectively implement the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program, striving to have 15 more products meeting OCOP standards of 3 stars or more by 2023.
According to the Director of the Provincial Sub-Department of Rural Development and Irrigation - Vo Kim Thuan, in 2023, the Sub-Department will continue to coordinate with localities, develop plans, and advise the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to invest in infrastructure works to serve agricultural, forestry and fishery production in a synchronous and multi-purpose manner. In particular, the unit will prioritize allocating capital for construction of irrigation works serving high-tech agricultural production areas, developing specialized farming and aquaculture areas. In addition, the Sub-department will also continue to upgrade, maintain and maintain post-investment works and works to improve prevention capacity to limit disadvantages caused by natural disasters; respond to changes in climate for production and people's daily life.
The province continues to implement supportive policies to promote high-tech application on cows
Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Nguyen Thanh Truyen said: In 2023, the industry will continue to urge investors to speed up the progress of water supply projects in the lowlands, striving for rural households to use clean water that meets the current technical standard of 60%. Besides, the sector will promote the application of information technology and digital transformation in agriculture; effectively apply the deployed shared software; promote the implementation of level 4 online public services, public postal services according to the general regulations of the Government and the Provincial People's Committee; etc.
“In order to complete the targets and tasks, the sector has focused on analyzing and evaluating the advantages and disadvantages and implemented it at the beginning of the year with the highest determination. Accordingly, the sector continues to develop production associated with restructuring the Agriculture sector; focus on converting inefficient production land to other crops; apply production processes according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards to increase productivity and quality of agricultural products; guide and transfer science and technology to farmers. In order to limit the situation of " high crops and low prices" as well as the impact of the market, the sector continues to promote propaganda and guide farmers to transform production, change their thinking from agricultural production to agricultural economy to catch up with the trend of the 4.0 era", added Mr. Nguyen Thanh Truyen./.
