Area of large-scale fields in Long An decreased

Until now, the Mekong Delta province of Long An has had 24 enterprises, 1 cooperative and 7,774 households producing 63 crops of large-scale paddy fields with a total area of 18,706 hectares. Of these, 4,100 hectares had been harvested with an estimated amount of fresh rice of 60 quintals per hectare and 246,000 tons of output; decreasing by 5 fields and 1,155 hectares compared to those of last year.

The reduction of large-scale paddy fields has created the difficulties to rice export market and the shortage of capital. Besides, the adoption of new methods for cultivating large-scale paddy fields and the disagreement over price between enterprises and farmers are also considered as the causes of this decrease, said the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Long An province Le Van Hoang.

Functional agencies should have appropriate policies to support enterprises and farmers in developing large-scale fields, to avoid “high crops and low prices” paradox and to have stable materials for export./.
