Building fruit tree material area in Dong Thap Muoi region

Recently, the conversion of inefficient rice land to other crops in the Dong Thap Muoi region of Long An province has been showing positive results.

Due to the influence of climate change, farmers in districts in Dong Thap Muoi region of the province actively convert the inefficient rice land to other crops. Since 2012, farmers have converted over 18,000 hectares of land to grow durian, jackfruit, pomelo, seedless lemon, etc, earning profit many times higher than rice.

Provincial Sub-Department of Cultivation, Plant Protection and Quality Management of Agricultural Products informed that, with available favorable conditions, the provincial agriculture sector has been implementing the pilot project to build the fruit tree material area in Dong Thap Muoi region to meet the standards for domestic consumption and export in the period of 2022-2025. It is necessary to improve the quality and value of products, contributing to increasing income for farmers.

Granting planting area code helps durian farmers feel secure about their output

Tan Thanh district is located on the acidic soil of Dong Thap Muoi region. In recent years, farmers in the district have converted over 1,000 hectares of inefficient rice land to planting fruit trees such as durian, pomelo, seedless lemon, Thai jackfruit;etc, thereby contributing to the socio-economic development in the locality. Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tan Lap Commune, Tan Thanh District - Tran Minh Nghia said that at present, the commune has over 400 hectares of fruit trees, of which, there are about 200 hectaresof durian, mainly in Bang Lang and Truong Cong Y hamlets. The commune has built 2 planting area codes for 26.5 hectares of durian with 9 participating households, with an output of nearly 160 tons/year. This is a positive signal to help farmers feel secure in production, no longer worrying about the output of durian.

Ms. Do Thi Bay (Tan Lap commune) have switched to growing durian for nearly 6 years. She said, with over 2 hectares of durian, the last crop she earned nearly 3 billion VND. Her durian area has been granted a planting area code for export to the Chinese market. Therefore, the selling price and consumption of durian is also easier.

Vinh Hung district currently has over 440 hectares of fruit trees, mainly pomelo, jackfruit, mango and durian. Mr. Mai Van Trung (Vinh Tri commune) converted the inefficient rice-growing area to grow pomelo. With nearly 1,600 pomelo trees, he harvests about 2 tons of fruit every month.

Mr. Trung shared: “My pomelo garden is more than 5 years old. I started harvesting pomelos about a year ago. Pomelo grows quite well with local soil and climate conditions. I'm doing local coordination for my pomelo branding. I hope the output and price of pomelo will be improved in the near future.”

Every month, Mr. Mai Van Trung (Vinh Tri commune, Vinh Hung district) harvests about 2 tons of pomelo

According to Deputy Head of Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Vinh Hung district - Le Quoc Bon, the district has been assigned to build a fruit tree area of 2,250 hectares by 2025. The district has coordinated with communes and towns in propagating and mobilizing farmers to convert inefficient rice lands to more economically efficient crops in accordance with the province's guidelines and orientations. “In the coming time, the district's agriculture sector will continue to coordinate with relevant departments and agencies to organize training and guide people to produce pruducts satisfying VietGAP, GlobalGAP standards, etc to improve production efficiency and protect consumers' health” - Mr. Le Quoc Bon said.

The specific objective of the Project to 2025 is to form a fruit tree material area of over 10,500 hectares, of which the area for jackfruit is over 3,500 hectares, mango is over 700 hectares, durian is 340 hectares, and over 6,000 hectares for other fruit trees (pomelo, banana, custard apple, etc).

With the participation of agriculture sectors from the province to the locality and the consensus of people, it is believed that the project will soon achieve the set goals, contributing to solving the problem of output for agricultural products, improving income input for farmers./.
