High-tech agricultural production - Right direction

High-tech agriculture towards clean agriculture is one of the priority tasks in the Provincial Agriculture sector restructuring project. For this purpose, in recent years, the province has had many high-tech application models that were replicated to change production practices of the people in order to save costs and increase profits.

Efficiency of high-tech applications

Since the deployment up to now, the whole province has over 18,300 hectares of rice applied high technology, of which, 100 percent of the area has used high-quality seeds; more than 1,878 hectares of vegetables has been applied high technology (productivity has increased by 5-20 percent, profit increased from 2-5 million VND per 1,000 square meters compared to traditional methods); more than 2,077 hectares of dragon fruits have been applied high technology and guided farmers to produce according to VietGAP process. Director of Vinh Thuan Agricultural Cooperative (Vinh Hung district) - Nguyen Thi Dieu Ngan said: “Each crop, the cooperative produces over 100 hectares of high-tech rice, of which 10 hectares are produced under VietGAP and organic process with rice varieties such as ST24, Nang Hoa 9, red rice and purple rice. In the 2019 - 2020 Winter-Spring crop, after harvesting, the production of high-tech applications has brought higher economic efficiency and created clean products compared to traditional production.

High-tech agricultural production - Right direction

According to the Agriculture sector, the average productivity of high-tech rice cultivation is higher than 200-300 kilos per hectare but the cost is lower from 1-1.5 million VND per hectare, so the average profit is higher over 2 million VND per hectare compared to outside the model. In addition, many models of organic rice use only organic fertilizer and probiotics; do not use fertilizers, chemical drugs to meet the technical requirements and clean rice criteria as well as reduce 40-50 percent of nitrogen fertilizer, and so on.

Mr. Le Phuoc Doan - a member of Vinh Thuan Agricultural cooperative, said: “When participating in the cooperative, all stages of production are mechanized. Farmers are assured of the output of agricultural products because they are contracted directly with the purchasing company at a price higher than the market. Besides, seeds and agricultural materials are supported by cooperatives and businesses to the end of the crop. Profit increased by over 4 million VND per hectare per crop. In addition, the demonstration of using Ultralight smart aircraft to spray pesticides on crops was responded by farmers. Through the models, many farmers themselves applied implants in production, organic fertilizer and biological products, etc. with an area of over 7,850 hectares.

Since the application of high technology, Mr. Nguyen Van Trung (Hoa Phu commune, Chau Thanh district) was quite surprised by the remarkable efficiency despite having more than 10 years of experience in growing dragon fruits. He said: "Planting dragon fruits using high technology combining with VietGAP process, using micro-organic fertilizer, bio-fertilizer, insect traps, dragon fruit branch crusher, economical watering, etc. help farmers save 80 percent of the labor force, save electricity and water as well as increase efficiency, etc. In addition, dragon fruits have bigger fruits, higher productivity and meet export standards with very good prices to the US, EU, and other fastidious markets."

Currently, the application of high technology on dragon fruits has been responded and replicated by farmers in the province over 1,370 hectares. In addition, a few other crops are also applied high technology as lemon trees. The Ben Luc Agricultural services cooperative (Luong Hoa commune, Ben Luc district) is one of the pioneers in the application of science and technology and investment in new technologies in lemon tree planting. In the first months of this year, although the weather was unusual, drought and salinity intruded early, the 50-hectare lemon garden of the cooperative was still lush and had many fruits.

Right direction

Through the models, the farmers gradually changed farming practices and focused on using organic fertilizer, building automatic irrigation systems, biological pesticides, using membrane houses and net houses to produce more quality products to meet the needs of the market. Many high-tech agricultural models open up new directions in economic development, gradually creating agricultural production areas with high productivity, quality and economic efficiency.

Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Nguyen Thanh Truyen said: “The application of high technology is the right direction in agricultural production to improve productivity and quality of crops, livestock as well as create safe and quality products. This is a prerequisite for developing agriculture, especially in the era of advanced science and technology. Modernizing agriculture and rural areas will contribute to improving the lives of people and building new rural areas.”

Recently, the agricultural product market has had many fluctuations; the Covid-19 epidemic has affected the price of some crops after the Tet holiday, farmers have been not profitable. Climate change, drought, saline intrusion cause lack of freshwater for the 2019 - 2020 Winter-Spring crop in the lower districts. Therefore, in the coming time, the Agriculture sector will continue to restructure production in the direction of coping with climate change in the long term; strengthen trade promotion to ensure the output for agricultural products.

"The application of science and technology, industrialization and modernization of agriculture and rural areas in combination with the master plan of production areas are also the solutions for sustainable development of agriculture" - Mr. Truyen added.

“The application of high technology is the right direction in agricultural production to improve productivity and quality of crops, livestock as well as create safe and quality products. This is a prerequisite for developing agriculture, especially in the era of advanced science and technology. Modernizing agriculture and rural areas will contribute to improving the lives of people and building new rural areas”.
