Supply chain and agricultural production not let to be disrupted

During the social distancing to prevent and control the Covid-19 epidemic, many types of agricultural products were stuck, without output. Together with relevant departments and branches, the Agriculture sector of Long An province has been implementing synchronous solutions to remove difficulties and promote production, supply and consumption of agricultural products.

Agricultural product consumption is connected to the chains of convenience stores, supermarkets, etc.

Diversifying the forms of supply

To support the consumption of agricultural products, the Agriculture sector cooperates with the Industry and Trade sector and businesses in the province to strengthen connections with telecommunications groups, businesses, and modern distribution channels to conduct agricultural digital transformation as well as support to bring agricultural products to participate in e-commerce platforms to promote and connect consumption.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade, the province's goods and agricultural products are presently consumed through many channels, however, it is still difficult, especially the agricultural products that are in harvest season such as rice, lemon, dragon fruit and shrimp. Currently, the Department of Industry and Trade is trying to create conditions for businesses and cooperatives in the area to consume agricultural products in provinces and cities less affected by the epidemic. At the same time, goods are put into the distribution system, step by step link and build the supply chain of goods to help farmers feel secure about the output of agricultural products.

At the same time, the Department of Industry and Trade mobilized businesses and cooperatives in the province to sell goods to stabilize prices during social distancing. According to Director of My Thanh Agricultural Cooperative (Thu Thua district) - Nguyen Quoc Cuong, the cooperative specializes in supplying vegetables, tubers and fruits, with an average of 20 tons per day, selling at a stable price. However, the most difficult problem of the cooperative is the transportation to consumption places in big cities and provinces due to regulations on epidemic prevention and control.

Director of the Department of Industry and Trade - Nguyen Tuan Thanh said that the supply of goods in the days of implementing the Prime Minister's Directive No. 16/CT-TTg was well done, the goods were secure, and the prices were relatively stable to meet the needs of the people. Although the connection to consume agricultural products, is not as desired, it is still positive. Among them, the highlight is the connection of consumption of dragon fruit. Currently, most convenience stores like Bach Hoa Xanh, San Ha, so on or supermarkets like Co.op, AEON (HCMC) agree to buy dragon fruit from people. “The ability to supply goods in the province is quite stable, not scarce and without big fluctuations. However, there are still some difficulties in traveling, harvesting and transporting goods and agricultural products. The Department is asking the province to give priority to vaccination against Covid-19 for traders, transporters and employees of store chains that supply agricultural products and goods in the province. At the same time, it considers to reopen some traditional markets when there are conditions to reduce pressure on chains of supermarket and convenience stores", Mr. Thanh added.

Stimulating production demand for Autumn-Winter crop

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) - Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh, recently, a special working group of the Ministry of ARD had proposed the Minister to suggest the Government to purchase reserve rice for Summer-Autumn 2021 so that farmers can feel safe to produce. This is considered a solution to stimulate production demand in the autumn-winter crop during the time when the Covid-19 epidemic is still complicated.

Currently, summer-autumn rice in the southern provinces (including Long An) is entering the harvest period, with the highest rice yield in August and September. In order to avoid the situation that traders take advantage of the difficult situation to make profit, the purchase and storage of rice from the national government should soon be approved to stimulate production, encourage farmers to continue production and ensure the completion of the next production plan.

“Currently, many localities in the province have been starting to sow the autumn-winter crop. However, due to the decrease in rice prices and difficulties in harvesting and processing, farmers are hesitant to step up the production of this rice crop. In addition to providing food, the autumn-winter crop also provides seeds for the winter-spring crop, so it is necessary to support farmers to consume summer-autumn rice to stimulate production in the autumn-winter rice crop.

On the other hand, the Department also advises the Provincial People's Committee on a plan to prioritize transportation for agricultural products, young trees, seeds, supplies and input materials for production in order to maintain the supply of essential goods for the people, avoiding disruptions and stagnation of the production and supply chain of agricultural products" - Ms. Khanh added./.
