Vietnam achieves dual goal of ‘both fighting against epidemics and maintaining economic growth’

In his opening speech, Prime Minister - Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that the Government embarked on implementing the 5-year socio-economic development plan, the economy faced many difficulties both at home and abroad for 5 years. After 5 years, our country is really better than ever, with high growth, all citizens enjoy development results, strengthened trust, etc. We take on many important roles in the regional and international arena, successfully organizing many important international events.

Particularly in 2020, under the influence of Covid-19, many countries fell into recession, Vietnam was a rare country that maintained positive growth, epidemic diseases were controlled, and ensured social security. Up to the present, Vietnam has achieved the dual goal of preventing and combating Covid-19 and maintaining economic growth. The Party building, anti-corruption work has also been promoted by the Party and State.

In the past 5 years, the entire Party, the entire people and the entire army have created more than 1,200 billion dollars worth of GDP. Particularly in 2020, despite the many difficulties caused by Covid-19 and the serious recession of the world economy since the great depression 1929-1932, our economy still persistently maintained positive growth of approximately 3 percent. According to IMF calculations, our country's economic size has now reached more than 340 billion dollars - standing in the top 40 largest economies in the world, equivalent to or surpassing some highly developed economies in the area. British Economist magazine ranked Vietnam in the top 16 most successful emerging economies in the world. According to World Bank data, with an average economic growth of 6.8 percent per year in the period 2016-2019, Vietnam is in the top 10 highest growing countries in the world.

National economic growth was contributed by the impressive growth of many emerging regions, which is another inspiring factor for many other localities to surpass themselves. Growth does not depend much on any particular economic sector.

Vietnam was not only economically successful but also made rapid social progress. Vietnam has created more than 8 million jobs, incomes and living standards are increasing, etc.

Referring to the current changes in the world and era context, the Prime Minister said that Vietnam could not be in the top group in the world in terms of income, it could be a leader in a number of fields. This is a time of consolidation of confidence, our economy, our country is moving forward rapidly and surely our nation will move forward faster. We cannot be subjective, we can do better, he said.

Thanks to the fierce determination of the entire political system, all levels, sectors and the unanimity, consensus, outstanding efforts of the business community and the people of the country, Vietnam has overcome many difficulties, challenges and achieves very important achievements, quite comprehensive in most fields, making many outstanding marks in the year 2020 and 5 years from 2016 to 2020.

Speaking at the Conference, General Secretary and State President - Nguyen Phu Trong expressed his delight for the 4th consecutive time attending the Government Conference with localities, this conference summarizes the year 2020 and discusses the plan implementing socio-economic development tasks in 2021. The conference took place at the end of 2020, the adjacent year to the XIIIth Party Congress, the last year implementing the 5-year plan and 10-year development strategy.

Although Vietnam still faces economic difficulties, it is a model of disease prevention, with the lowest cost and high responsibility to the international community. Specifically, to respond quickly, promptly and effectively to natural disasters and epidemics. To consolidate and enhance the people's confidence in the Party, State and socialist regime. In difficult and challenging times, the preeminence of the regime, good traditions, the will of our nation is promoted and brought to new heights. The proposed solutions are suitable for the situation and capacity of the country, accept to sacrifice some immediate benefits to protect the health and lives of the people, fight against epidemics such as fighting the enemy, etc.

Along with that, efforts to recover and maintain the highest possible growth rate are one of the highest growing economies in the world, with many timely and well-implemented guidelines and policies.

Directing major solutions and tasks in the year 2021 and in the coming time, the General Secretary and the State President require absolutely not to be subjective and satisfied because the goals set in 2021 are very high in the context that we still face many difficulties, the next time the world situation will develop very complicatedly, difficult to predict, the world will fall into a serious crisis in many aspects under the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
