Long An launchs movement to protect environment and fight against plastic waste

On December 4, Long An Provincial People's Committee held a ceremony to launch a movement on environmental protection, fighting against plastic waste, collecting and treating waste. Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Council - Pham Van Ranh; Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - Tran Van Can, leaders of departments and agencies of the province, Tan An city and nearly 1,000 participants attended the event.

The ceremony was held in response to the Prime Minister's call to join hands in combating plastic waste, raising the awareness of organizations and individuals about environmental protection.

Recently, the Government and the Prime Minister have drastically directed the control of environmental pollution due to the use of plastic bags and plastic products; the reduction, strengthening of recycling, reuse, and making the most of the value of plastic waste for socio-economic development activities.

In Long An, daily-life solid waste is collected about 570 - 590 tons per day, of which, disposable plastic products and plastic bags account for a large number. By 2025, the average volume of daily-life solid waste is estimated at 1,132.89 tons per day.

Long An Provincial People's Committee has issued Document No.4187/UBND-KTTC, dated August 9, 2019 to the Standing Committee of the provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, departments, branches and socio-political organizations, People's Committees of districts, towns and city on the effective implementation of activities saying “no” to disposable plastic products. Up to now, the State administrative agencies under the Provincial People's Committee no longer use disposable plastic bottles. The propaganda on environmental protection, community behavior change in the use of plastic products has contributed to reducing environmental pollution, protecting human health and the ecosystem.

At the ceremony, Chairman of the provincial People's Committee - Tran Van Can called on the community to participate in the movement to protect the environment, collect and treat plastic waste. He asked the provincial departments, agencies, and People's Committees of districts, towns and city to focus on implementing the following contents:

Firstly, the State management agencies in the field of environment should further promote their role in proposing solutions for waste management and treatment, especially plastic waste; implement effective management and treatment solutions for plastic waste; strengthen the control of waste collection, transportation and treatment; thoroughly tackle environmental pollution from garbage, which is directly affecting the lives of people; strictly handle organizations that violate the regulations on management of scrap, waste and hazardous waste.

Secondly, functional agencies should organize activities that have the participation of the community such as the campaign "Say "no" to disposable plastic products", cleaning the environment, collecting and treating waste, clearing flows, dredging canals and drainage systems; organize classes on environmental education; collect and recycle plastic waste, plastic bags at markets, supermarkets, trade centers, concentrated residential areas, etc. in order to encourage consumers to minimize the use of plastic products and plastic bags and abandon the habit of littering indiscriminately, raising the responsibility of the community.

Thirdly, the agencies should gradually develop a process for classifying, collecting recyclable plastic waste from consumers and carry out clear labeling on all materials to determine product recyclability; propagandize and mobilize businesses, production facilities, trade centers and supermarkets to cut down on the use of plastic, the packaging of plastic bags for their products and increase the use of products from environmentally friendly and recyclable materials; encourage businesses and production facilities to participate in socializing environmental protection, carry out their social responsibilities, including environmental protection.
