Since 2016, the PM has directed the construction of freshwater reservoirs to cope with drought and saltwater intrusion in Thanh Hoa district. Thereby, the PM directs the province to coordinate with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in formulating technical plans, approving the project, and reporting to the PM for consideration and decision.

In October 2016, the province carried out a survey and planning for freshwater reservoirs in the Dong Thap Muoi region, including 4 lakes in Tan Hung, Vinh Hung, Kien Tuong and Thanh Hoa districts. In which, priority is given to investment in the period 2017-2020 to build a freshwater reservoir in Thuan Binh commune of  Thanh Hoa district.

In parallel with the formulation of the reservoir planning in the Dong Thap Muoi region, the province has developed an investment project to build a freshwater reservoir in Thuan Binh commune according to the procedures according to the Law on Public Investment.

The total investment of the project is more than 718 billion VND. The total area of the project area is about 140 hectares, of which the reservoir surface area is more than 106 hectares. The plan to choose the overall layout according to the plan of double reservoir. The reservoir capacity is divided into 2 parts, including serving water supply for daily life, industry, tourism and services; The rest is used to supply water for agricultural irrigation.

According to Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Nguyen Thanh Truyen, the situation of salinity intrusion and drought in the province in recent years has been complicated, the salinity is increasingly encroaching into the rivers, causing many problems for economic losses, especially greatly affecting production and people's lives.

Accordingly, the project to build a freshwater reservoir in Thanh Hoa is to regulate fresh water in the rainy season and provide fresh water in the dry season in the project area in order to sustainably develop the province's socio-economy in the present and future.

The project will actively respond to the increasingly serious situation of drought and saltwater intrusion, ensuring water security and in line with the socio-economic development planning of the project beneficiary area in particular as well as the region between the two rivers of Vam Co and Long An province in general.

On the other hand, together with the existing irrigation system in the project area, it will ensure the supply of fresh water for more than 1,500 hectares of high-tech agricultural production and people's livelihood; water supply for industry and forest fire prevention and fighting along the border with an area of 3,300 hectares.

When the project is completed, it will also contribute to developing eco-tourism and improving the landscape of the area. It contributes to the socio-economic development of Thanh Hoa district in particular and Long An province in general.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Truyen, in order to implement the investment in the construction of freshwater reservoirs in Thuan Binh commune according to the set targets, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development continues to report to the Provincial People's Committee on implementing the procedures of freshwater reservoir project in Thuan Binh commune, consider and propose to the PM and central ministries and branches to consider providing financial support for the province to implement the project investment./.
