Farmers focus on production right from the beginning of the year
While the spring atmosphere is still bustling everywhere, farmers in Long An province are busy on the fields. Everyone hopes for a new year of favorable weather and a bountiful harvest.

Sticking to the fields
According to the recommendations of the provincial Department of Agriculture, before, during and after the Lunar New Year of the snake 2025 is the time when pests and diseases tend to develop complicatedly, so to ensure a successful crop, farmers need to be cautious and regularly visit the fields.
On the 2nd day of Tet, Mr. Vo Van Phuong (Long Thanh commune, Thu Thua district) visited the fields because the weather was quite unfavorable, the morning was cold and foggy. Mr. Phuong said: “Last year, I didn’t visit the rice fields until the 6th day of Tet. But this year, the weather was quite bad, so from the morning of the 2nd day of Tet, I visited the fields. Some rice fields in the low-lying areas had leaf rollers but the density was quite low, I sprayed pesticides to prevent them. Hopefully, this year, the rice crop will grow strongly and the price will be good”.
Similar to Mr. Phuong, Mr. Nguyen Van Sanh (Phu Ngai Tri commune, Chau Thanh district) visited the dragon fruit garden on the morning of the second day of Tet. Mr. Sanh said: “In recent years, the price of dragon fruit has been quite unstable, growers often suffer losses. Hopefully in the new year, the price of dragon fruit will improve and stabilize so that dragon fruit growers can make a profit and continue to invest in production”.

In Long Khe commune (Can Duoc district), many farmers also went to the fields to produce on the first days of spring. Mr. Ngo Van Hau (Hamlet 3, Long Khe commune) said: In the last Tet crop, his family planted more than 0.2 hectares of amaranth, achieving high yields and earning over 20 million VND. Thanks to that, his family had a happy and cozy Tet. He hopes that the weather in the new year will be favorable, prices will continue to be stable so that farmers can make a high profit from growing vegetables.
Mr. Nguyen Van Ut (My Le commune, Can Duoc district) - an experienced vegetable grower, said: “The issue that i am most concerned about now is the source of water for production because after Tet is the time of drought and salinity. Therefore, before Tet, I proactively stored water for production and during Tet, I also visit the garden to water and fertilize vegetables with liquid biological fertilizers”.
Director of the Agricultural Service Center of Can Duoc district - Nguyen Thi Cam Van said: “In order to successfully produce the Winter-Spring crop 2024-2025, the district's Department of Agriculture regularly coordinates with local authorities to strengthen monitoring, promptly handle diseases, and limit the impact on productivity and quality of agricultural products. In addition, the district has proactively implemented solutions to prevent and combat drought and saltwater intrusion, ensuring water sources for agricultural production, especially in high-tech vegetable production areas of the district such as Long Khe, Phuoc Van, Long Hoa, My Le communes, etc.
New Year's expectations
In 2024, the weather was complicated, natural disasters were unpredictable, affecting production. However, with the attention and direction of Party committees and authorities from the province to the grassroots level, and the drastic direction of the provincial Department of Agriculture, farmers in the province boldly promoted the application of high technology, scientific and technical advances, mechanization, etc. in production. Thereby, contributing to improving productivity, quality and production efficiency, completing and exceeding the targets and tasks set by the provincial Department of Agriculture.
Entering 2025, the provincial Department of Agriculture continues to set the goal of achieving success right from the Winter-Spring crop to lay the foundation for the following crops. According to the Department of Cultivation, Plant Protection and Agricultural Product Quality Management of the province, in the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, the whole province sowed 236,700 hectares of rice, reaching 105.3% of the plan. To ensure the success of this production crop, from the beginning, the provincial Department of Agriculture proactively built a specific sowing schedule for each region and assigned production plans to each locality. Currently, farmers in the province are focusing on taking care of the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring rice crop.
Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tan Tru district - Dang Van Tay Lo said: “The Winter-Spring rice areas in the district are often affected by the risk of water shortage at the end of the crop. Therefore, to minimize the damage caused by drought and saltwater intrusion, the district requires localities to step up propaganda and advise farmers to sow according to the district's crop calendar. In addition, the district also encourages farmers to focus on taking care of vegetables, livestock, aquatic products, etc to ensure high production efficiency.

In Vinh Hung district, up to now, the whole district has sown 28,658 hectares of winter-spring rice 2024-2025, the rice fields are mainly at the tillering and heading stages. Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vinh Hung district - Dinh Chau Phong informed: “In this winter-spring crop, the whole district is deploying and implementing the Project "Sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta" on an area of 6,000 hectares. In addition to rice, the whole district also has about 2,000 hectares of watermelon, sesame, lotus, squash and various leafy vegetables. To ensure effective production, the district's Department of Agriculture coordinates with localities to regularly visit the fields with farmers and to promptly advise and direct production".
Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Nguyen Thanh Truyen informed: In addition to rice, the whole province currently has nearly 12,000 hectares of lime, more than 7,800 hectares of dragon fruit, 3,240 hectares of jackfruit, over 786 hectares of durian; 12,000 hectares of various vegetables, etc in the fruiting/harvesting stage.
The provincial Department of Agriculture requested districts, towns and cities to direct localities to advise farmers to focus on the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring rice crop, proactively store water, dredge canals and ditches, use water economically and effectively.
Along with that, the provincial Department of Agriculture requested districts, towns and cities must closely follow the production situation to have timely and practical guidance measures; continue to expand the area of commodity production for advantageous crops; promote the issuance of growing area codes; encourage households to produce according to standards such as GAP, organic; create favorable conditions for businesses to cooperate with farmers in production, preliminary processing, processing and consumption of agricultural products.
Leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and farmers of Tan Thanh district visit the fields
Recently, the provincial Department of Agriculture visited the fields and surveyed rice diseases in Vinh Hung district. In general, the situation of pests, insects and diseases in the 2024-2025 winter-spring rice crop is lower than that of the 2023-2024 winter-spring rice crop. However, currently, the weather is foggy and humid, suitable for pests to attack rice, so farmers must not be negligent or subjective, and need to regularly visit the fields to have appropriate prevention and control measures.
The provincial Department of Agriculture recommends that farmers pay attention to brown planthoppers, leaf blast, rice stem borers, etc, which are likely to increase in the infected area on the 2024-2025 winter-spring rice crop at the tillering stage. Leaf blight, brown planthoppers, rice neck blast, grain sterility, etc are likely to increase on the 2024-2025 winter-spring rice crop at the heading and flowering stages. Farmers need to focus on monitoring to detect and prevent promptly and effectively - Mr. Nguyen Thanh Truyen added.
With the enthusiastic atmosphere and high determination from the first days of the year, it is believed that the agricultural production results in 2025 of the province will reach and exceed the set targets and plans./.
