Long An: Being more active and aggressive in preventing and fighting African swine fever

Secretary of Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of Provincial People's Council - Pham Van Ranh requested that the provincial People's Committee directed the sectors and localities to be more aggressive in preventing and controlling ASF.

Chairman of the provincial People's Committee - Tran Van Can said that there were about 11,000 pig-raising households in Long An, mostly in Duc Hoa, Ben Luc, Thu Thua, Thanh Hoa districts and Tan An city. In which, more than 10,000 households raise less than 50 pigs, over 600 households raise from 50 to 100 pigs.

The whole province currently has 11 pig-gathering places from other provinces to Long An to distribute to slaughterhouses and 42 concentrated slaughterhouses, including 9 large-scale concentrated slaughterhouses.

Following the direction of the Prime Minister, ministries, central sectors and the direction of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial People's Committee has implemented many measures and directed the implementation drastically. By this time, the province has set up a Steering Committee for prevention and control of ASF, assigned each member to be in charge of specific districts, towns and cities.

Simultaneously, the Provincial People's Committee set up a rapid response team operating 24 hours per day and 4 temporary stations on National Highway 1 (one in Ben Luc district and one in Tan An City neighbouring Tien Giang province), Provincial Road 824 (one in Duc Hoa district) and National Road 50 (the one in Can Giuoc district). 

According to Mr. Tran Van Can, the Provincial People's Committee temporarily assigned the Chairman of the People's Committee of districts, towns and cities to direct the inspection and control of the origin of pigs when the pig-carrying vehicles passed through the province. If the origin of pigs is not determined and the pigs are in the epidemic areas, this number of pigs will be destroyed.

In addition, the provincial People's Committee strengthened the veterinary team and assigned responsibilities to the provincial public security, the provincial border guards and the inter-sector inspection team to control the epidemics, assigned the traffic police force to check vehicles, domestic and abroad tourists to Long An that brought unprocessed or processed pork for its origin, if this pork is not clear, it will also be destroyed. 

Regarding to documents related to ASF, the provincial People's Committee issued an urgent print of over 20,000 brochures to supply to households, especially livestock households and slaughterhouses so that they grasped,  actively  prevented and controlled the epidemics.

Moreover, the provincial People's Committee also instructed localities to strengthen and better sprayed disinfectant in breeding and prepared the areas for burying diseased pigs. If a disease occurs, it must be handled timely to prevent the epidemic from spreading out in the province.

At the meeting, Secretary of Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Council - Pham Van Ranh emphasized that the provincial policy was active and determined to prevent and fighted diseases early, did not wait for "urgent situation". The goal is to prevent epidemics happening in Long An.

However, he said that the spirit of preventing and controlling epidemics in localities was not synchronized, many places were still subjective. Many households, especially livestock households and slaughterhouses have not been fully aware of the dangers of the epidemics as well as measures to prevent and control.

Therefore, he asked the provincial People's Committee to direct the sectors and localities to be more fierce, focused on determining "epidemics" as "enemy" and preventing epidemics as preventing the enemy. Particularly, the propaganda on the mass media must be strengthened so that people understand and comply with measures to prevent and combat epidemics.

The members of provincial People's Council must also perform their functions well to supervise the sectors and localities in the implementation of the guidelines and direction of the Central Committee and the Provincial People's Committee. Thereby, it contributies to the prevention and control of epidemics effectively, and prevents damage to farmers so that it does not affect the economy of the province./.
